TikTok Is A Spyware App, Told By Reddit CEO, Steve Huffman

  • Reddit CEO, Steve Huffman said TikTok is “fundamentally parasitic” at a panel discussion on Wednesday.
  • Huffman said he actively tells people not to install the app, told: “TikTok Is A Spyware App.”
  • The US government is scrutinizing TikTok’s handling of user data closely, and many government agencies have banned their staff from using it because of its Chinese roots.

TikTok Is A Spyware App: TikTok may be a perception around the world, but Reddit CEO and co-founder Steve Huffman call it a “parasite”. According to TechCrunch, this caustic view came up during a panel discussion at ‘Social 2030’ event with former public policy executive Elliot Schrage and former Facebook VP of Product Sam Lessin.

Huffman said, “I look at that app as so fundamentally parasitic, that it’s always listening, the fingerprinting technology they use is truly terrifying, and I could not bring myself to install an app like that on my phone.” He added, “I actively tell people, ‘Don’t install that spyware on your phone’.”

The Chinese video-sharing app has a huge fan following in India with more than 200 million members. Despite its popularity, it is facing a tough time due to regulatory issues. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has put a complete ban on making TikTok videos inside the premises The Golden Temple in Amritsar. The SGPC has put posters inside the temple complex which reads “TikTok is prohibited here.”

The app, promoted by ByteDance, was banned by the Madras High Court last year. But, the order was later lifted and the app was back on app stores. It was also in the news earlier, for suspending the accounts of a few creators who had posted political content.

In an interview, it’s country head Nikhil Gandhi said the Chinese company, which has 200 million users, has “democratized” the art and culture scene in India. The app is aiming to have 1 lakh creators by the end of 2020.

Things have been rocky for TikTok in the US too. Democratic and Republican party candidates alike have been talking about the security risks linked to TikTok for some time now. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is the latest government agency to ban the use of this video app. The Department Of Homeland Security, US Army, and Navy have also banned the use of the social media service. US Army doesn’t allow its members to install the app on their devices to prevent the leak of sensitive information.TikTok has been accused of sharing customer data with China.
