Linux Shortcut Keys For Terminal You Should Know

If you are new in Ubuntu, keyboard shortcuts are truly a great way to improve your productivity and make repetitive tasks faster. Ubuntu comes with a powerful set of keyboard shortcuts. You can use the following shortcuts to run terminal commands quickly in the most optimal manner:

Use this shortcut to move the cursor to the start of a line.
Use this shortcut to move the cursor to the end of the line.
Use this shortcut to kill the current process.
Use this shortcut to search the history based on the entered keywords.
Use this shortcut to delete the current line.
Use this shortcut to delete the text at the right side of the cursor.
Use this shortcut to delete the text before the cursor.
Use this shortcut to clear the output of a terminal command(s).
Use this shortcut to move the cursor forward by one word.
Use this shortcut to move the cursor back by one word.
Enter a letter and then tab twice to list all the commands beginning with that letter.

Linux Shortcut Keys For Terminal You Should Know

1. Ctrl+A

This shortcut will move the cursor to the start of the line.

This is useful when you are typing a long command or path in the terminal and you want to go to the starting of it.

You cannot use the mouse to move the cursor to the beginning of the line.

2. Ctrl+E

This shortcut has the opposite function to Ctrl+A. Ctrl+A sends the cursor to the starting of the line whereas Ctrl+E shifts the cursor to the end of the line.

Note: If you have the Home and End keys on your keyboard, you can also use them. Home is equivalent to Ctrl +A and End is equivalent to Ctrl + E.

3. Ctrl+C

This key combination that you should press when you want to break out of a command or process on a terminal. This will stop a running program immediately.

If you want to stop using a program running in the foreground, just press this key combination.

4. Ctrl+R

This key combination starts a reverse search, through the bash history, simply type characters that should be unique to the command to search previously entered command.

5. Ctrl+U

Erase the current line when typed a wrong command. Instead of using the backspace to delete the current line, use this linux shortcut keys for terminal. This will erase everything from the current cursor position to the starting of the line.

6. Ctrl+K

This shortcut will delete everything from the current cursor position to the end of the line.

7. Ctrl+W

By using this key combination, you can delete the word prior to the cursor position. If the cursor is on a word itself, it will delete all letters from the cursor position to the beginning of the word.

8. Ctrl+L

clear the terminal/screen. (same effect as the “clear” command).

9. Alt+F

This combination will help you to move one word forward. Alternatively, we can use the Ctrl + right arrow to do the same.

10. Alt+B

This combination will help you to move one-word backward. Go left (back) one word.

11. Tab

Last but not the least, the most handy shortcut and time saver for the Linux command line. This actually makes navigating directories faster in the CLI than the traditional GUI browser.

Just start typing a command, filename, directory name, or even command options and hit the tab key. It will either automatically complete what you were typing or it will show all the possible results for you. It even works at the lilo prompt and in some X applications.
